To find out more about Birmingham’s arts scene and the Feel the Heat campaign run by Marketing Birmingham read on…
So tell me a bit about Birmingham’s arts scene…
Birmingham is home to the
City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) which is one of the world’s leading symphony orchestras. The orchestra is resident at the renowned
Symphony Hall which since it opened in 1991, has been acclaimed as one of the finest concert halls in the world by critics, performers and public alike.
Birmingham is also home to the
Birmingham Royal Ballet which along with contemporary dance company
DanceXchange resides at
Birmingham Hippodrome – the UK’s busiest theatre. Organisations such as
sampad widen the dance offer in the city and allow a more international flavour to performances.
The
NEC Arena is one of the UK’s favourite venues for concerts and regularly plays host to international acts and big names including Take That and Justin Timberlake. The NEC Arena can hold a staggering 12,300 people but the city also hosts much more intimate gigs at venues like
The Jam House and
Carling Academy. Plus as a breeding ground for new talent bands including UB40 were discovered performing in local pubs around the city. In fact the city’s music scene is currently receiving a great deal of attention from the music press with the emergence of bands such as
The Twang and
Editors both hailing from Birmingham.
There are over 47,000 seats available for people to watch performances in the city everyday, that’s an incredible 17 million seats a year!
But it’s not just about performances… More than half a million objects fill the cabinets and walls of
Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. Here you will find everything from Renaissance masterpieces to 9,000-year-old Middle-Eastern treasures. For those looking for something a little more recent check out contemporary art at
Ikon Gallery or for something different the selection of famous album covers at
St. Paul’s Gallery. The
RBSA gallery offers the chance to see ceramics as well as fine art.
For those seeking something a bit different to keep them, entertained Birmingham is home to a number of ground-breaking and unique festivals. The
Fierce! Festival is resident in Birmingham and recently celebrated its 10th Birthday here. Plus newer festivals including
Gigbeth and
The Festival of Xtreme Building are increasingly choosing Birmingham as their home.
There are simply too many arts organisations in the city to cover all of them here but whatever you are interested in check out our
events calendar and you will be sure to find it.
